Our Chukars killed their own half grown offspring, who had been hiding under provided cover within the run. I don't like the Chukars much, no matter how beautiful they are. They are reclusive and don't seem to like people around. And then there's the infanticide thing.

No game birds really want people around. They get used to you but never much more than that.

Did your chukar brood their own eggs or did you hatch chicks and put them back with tbeir parents?

The chukar chicks hatched under the hen. My daughter bought a whole little "flock" of 5, consisting of 1 adult male, 2 adult hens, and 2 offspring chicks. The guy who sold them to her told her the adults might be aggressive to the young ones so we knew that and added lots of cover within the run - straw, grass, sticks, etc. piled about 2 ft. high. The chicks hung out under all this and we only knew they were there because we heard them peeping. After a day or so, they came out and walked around scratching, eating, etc. same as the adults. We found a pile of feathers and saw no chicks for a couple of days, so thought they were both dead, but miraculously one survived by making itself a nest in the dense front corner of the run - we found it yesterday because it came out to be fed. My little dog found the body of the other one somewhere (outside the run) and carried it near to me. So I am not certain now what exactly happened. Feathers inside the run and body outside the run (headless). Something killed one. The other was given a very large flowerpot laid on its side in her chosen place as far from the coop and adults as she can get. She is calm inside there and sits on a pile of dry straw much of the time, except to come out to eat. Sorry for the long post. Oh, BTW, there are no other birds in that coop or run with the chukars.

Predators can pull a whole bird through any hole you can pass a nickel through. What size wire are you using?

I had this problem. Lost over half my quail to a raccoon this way. Cages were 1" caging. Now cages are completely covered in 1/4" mesh and no problems (since wrapping have lots of evidence of raccoons trying to get in but no more lost birds)
