Partridge rocks feathers

Ha - I'll accept your wyandotte interuption of a perfectly fine partridge feather chat IF and ONLY IF, you place chicken and feather photos on the thread. So THERE.

Detailed photos of what we are talking about - HELPS. So, if you don't have good ones. Get out a camera and get to work!

I promise the minute I get any decent light I'll do a partridge comparison.

Thanks, Stacey, would love to see. Maybe that's the kind my Henrietta was. My GLWs, while kind of young, are also kind of "puny" as Wyandottes. making me think it had to be something else, and so are my Partridge Rocks. It's been a hunt and peck thing looking for my Henrietta kind.

If your Wyandottes are still less than a year old and don't look very "fluffy", don't worry about it. The boys especially go through a gangly stage, where they look kind of skinny and not very impressive. I have 5 right now between the ages of 5-8 mos., and only one is looking as big as the old man that used to be in the pen. If by the age of 18 mos. they still look kind of puny, then you can assume they aren't going to get any better.

I didn't get that photo today since I was gone, but I'll try to do it tomorrow.

LOL I have an SLW who is about four weeks old, just going silver about the head and neck. She's looked so awkward for so long we now call her Ickabod. At least I suppose it's a she, we'll see. No comb development at all compared to the rocks and buffs at that age.

Kind of a neat bird.

Of course I want to take pictures of feathers and feathering and work on the turkey pen so it's pouring rain.

Every time I use the power drill around the Tom he gobbles. It's way too funny. He was all puffed out and displaying. Sigh. If only his tail would grow out. But I'll have to wait for his next moult. He was definitely low gobbler, his tail was shredded by the others where he was.

Funny, I was working on the turkey pen area the day before yesterday to beat last night's rain. It's in the area where we used to have our goats before Hurricane Rita, so all the yard junk got stuffed into their old shed. Now the shed has collasped, and all the stuff in and on it needs to come out. It'll be really nice once I get the area all back together and cleaned up, but it's the fact that I have to do it that I hate. We had even partially taken down the old fence, and now I'm going to have to put it back up. The bright side is that it will go up better than the last job my DH did, because he'll be digging the holes and I'll be putting the fence up. Never trust a Navy brat with country girl work.

Wow very pretty and clear lacing!!! Nifty looking bird! It looks like it may clear up this afternoon and I can get some feather pics!

It's nice I'm not alone working on the eternal upgrades

whether turkey, chicken or livestock. I stopped waiting on good weather awhile ago, so I was out in the rain, screwing up boards and trying to keep the chicken help out of the way.

There's always more to do.

I still love it.

Okay, here's the beginning of my photo record for the group. Keep in mind, they're seven weeks and FAR from their mature coloration but things are already getting powerfully interesting.

The one with the truest partridge markings is Starbuck.

The trio of pullets reflect where the rest tend to be and their difference. Some are a golden headed, some a red brown, some brown over red brown, and some mahogany.

Starbucks lacing is fine and clear. The more melanistic the pullet the heavier and thicker, almost barred, the body feathers are. Her breast is also already the most red.

The first is black brown with a red head.

The second a comparison red brown behind black brown.

Well, I was gone a day and I'm behind but what nice pictures are here now! Thanks for the word about the slow growth rate of the GLW, Blisschick - well, that could be the thing because mine are from June or so. I guess I thought they'd already be full grown and yet of course that's kind of dumb!
Stacy, I'm not sure if Henrietta was that beautiful because I can't remember enough about the back feathers being that distinguished-looking, but I think the picture of your hen is the closest I've seen, particularly the head and neck. Thanks for showing me, and I think that's the kind I should try for if I ever need another chicken, lol, buying 6 50 pound bags of feed a week now, no kidding. Walkswithdog, my tom turkey gobbles if he doesn't see me dragging a food bag, lol.
Thanks for the tip, ella. I love looking at pictures of birds and that's a good site to do it Who thinks these are just chickens as beautiful as they can be?
