I can tell at around 1 1/2 to 2 months so you CAN tell before 6 months
It depends on the quality--lesser quality birds can be sexed earlier. Some lines carry smaller combs in general. I have a hen who has a fairly good sized comb, and I know breeders who breed for teensy tiny combs. I personally don't care how large a comb is if it is well shaped. Well, I care that it not be so small as to look feminine. Sexual vigor is related to comb size.
I had one boy who was a full nine months old before I knew he was a "he." I have a girl who didn't confirm her femininity (lay an egg) until she was more than a year old. I have a 2+ year old boy whose gender was questioned by a licensed judge when he was 18 months old. He still has some feminine features--but he also has a number of children.
Looks like the little gal I got from you IS a HE afterall!
I don't care. I will keep him as long as I can figure out how to hide the crowing! Luckily everyoen keeps saaying they are quiet..
However I sure HOPE comb size has nothing to do with 'vigor' as the wolf queen put it....I want a laid back quiet roo with a 'burp' of a voice, if I'm going to have one. He will NOT be allowed near the hens. My intentions for him are as a visiting therapy pet.
Maybe I'll look into seeing if he could be neutered!

I knew it looked familiar, i was just reading this saying wait a min all my ppeps is that came from me? Wow, i really thought it was a girl but from the looks of that pic it has to be a boy, even the wattles are coming in very dark in color already.
I am sorry, It looks like the color changed too? or is it the pic?
Oh ok i see the silver now.
Yeah, I was so happy calling him a 'she' believing he was one. LOL
If you look at the last blurry pick of like a weekand a half ago there was NO COMB!!!! Maybe its those immune boosting veterinary chinese herbs I have been giving him for his sneezes that have made him SUPER SIZE overnight! LOL
ok, NO more vitamins and herbs for him....he will be in the guiness book for being the biggest silkie ever! LOL.
We are trying desperately hard to move. Looks liek there is a chance we may be able to do so if we 'rent' our house out we can get a loan to buy. We are in a bad market and owe more than its worth right now---if we can make this work we can be out from under this lame chicken ordinance in as little as 2 months!!!
YAY! so Monkie can crow till his hearts content!!!...(just not at 5 am please)
The light brahma better be a girl! She came from an order of pullets!
but THAT would be just my luck LOL !!!!!!
Nahhh, I'm sure she's a girl...though she sure plays like a roo!!!
She and the silkie kick box and puff up and bounce off eachother like Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum from Alice in Wonderland... LOL complete with the squeeky honky sound effects!!!! LOL....
Gosh I hadnt seen that movie in FOREVER! Funny how their zainy actions dug up the images!
