Hi everyone! I normally wouldn’t ask this early but I heard Partridge is like the only color that can be used to sex silkies. This is Kiwi. Kiwi is only about five weeks old, but I don’t see black on its chest so I’m leaning girl? Maybe?

Too early?

I think it is probably a female but the comb seems big. Sometimes the black chest feathers come in later. I think it is a case of 'wait and see.'
That’s what I figured!! I mostly deal with Seramas, and you can tell with those guys after only a few weeks. The anticipation is killing me with Kiwi!

Either way will be fine, just trying to figure out if it’ll go in with the girls or in with the bachelors!

Silkies are difficult to tell for a lot of reasons. You could send in a sample to a lab if you're impatient to know. Lots of people do that now.

I hate to say it, but I think Kiwi is a rooster. My last partridge silkie I had
had a largish comb just like that when he was little. (This picture is of him when he's older, like 9 months or so.)

I swear, this just goes to show that silkies are the most annoying birds to sex! This is why I like Seramas. By five weeks you pretty much can be positive if they’re boys or girls.

Turns out Kiwi is a girl! I wouldn’t have been too bothered if she was a roo, but girl is definitely preferred.

My black silkie is 15 weeks old, and I've still got no idea what it is! I've been back and forth a dozen times. I've got cochins and d'Uccles, and they're also easy to ID early. I knew by 2 weeks with most, and definitely by 3. This silkie though?

If you post a thread with pictures you will be able to get more opinions on your bird. Silkies are certainly tough though

I've posted a couple. Opinions were pretty split. But mine seems to not have quite the right comb for a silkie. It doesn't look walnut to me. I got him or her from Rural King, so Hoover's Hatchery. But I'm wondering if it's possible the bird is mixed or if that's just a hatchery quality thing. It's got 5 toes on each foot. It's got black skin and legs. But it appears to have some more smooth looking feathers on the wings. It's got me stumped for sure.
