Hey all, still new here and new to chickens in general. We weren’t too particular about what eggs we got upon getting into the hobby early this spring, we just wanted to dive in and get our feet wet. Originally we had planned to get a random couple dozen eggs and go from there. When the pandemic blew up, a lot of previous arrangements fell through.. We made the best of it and kept moving forward and definitely no regrets. As we progressed through hatching, raising and all the additional learning of rearing up some decent girls, we watched years of other members experiences and situations in a matter of months that really made our lives so much easier. We panicked when first seeing chicks melt into the floor like pancakes and seem dead... questioned the honking geese when none were to be seen, cried upon nearly losing two (not wanting to lose any but knowing losses are part of the game). You all helped us so much without knowing, and can’t thank you all enough.
we made it this far but here is our very first active call.. who have we got?

These are our most recent acquisitions, and unfortunately did not have the opportunity to hatch them.. but maybe in the future. They are from a farm in uxbridge where a couple Landscapers sons raise their own specialty flocks atop the farms standard layers and meat birds. Apparently partridge and ginger colours don’t fair as well as their blacks and whites when it comes to demand, so we took home these older 3 instead of fresh hatched chicks or eggs. They are apparently 5wks old now and tons more personality and spunk when it comes to handling themselves as the smallest things around. The flock (aside from the 4 barred rock) has taken to them well, our roo especially; but they aren’t housed together yet (and back-up plan is ready if they aren’t accepted). I know it’s probably far too early yet to tell but I think we have one cockerel (Ginger head) and two pullets (Chipmunk/speckled head) based simply on their personalities, actions and coloration. Any thoughts?

This is Buffy, an unnamed pullet and Hei-hei, our runt and slow featherer.
They are supposed to be black-lace Wyandotte but have come to think Buffy and Hei Hei are Easter eggers (Hei Hei also doesn’t seem to have a tail), and the unnamed girls is a black lace, but unsure yet. These girls are 4 1/2mo.

And these are our first hatches, the old ladies as we call them. Ez(merelda) was originally believed to be a hen and did have the French boots but grew out of them. Roo his brother that passed was known from the start (presumed due to leadership) and already had far more colour and tail feathers than Ez does. We are told they are either black copper maran or olive Easter egger, whichever may be the case; we could have stopped with them and been happy as they have so much presence but addiction led into so many other beautiful additions as well. They are 5 months, Ez takes care of everyone, Eyebrows (by the sandbox) is mainly iridescent green/blue with slight copper hackle feathers, Cheeky is iridescent green with many bright copper hackle feathers. Just hoping to see Ez colour out fully and what colour the girls lay. 😜
forgot, we have a third pullet named Crazytown but well.. let’s just say she’s shy.

Those are all wyandotte mix cockerels. Are you sure they’re 4 1/2 months old? They look younger.

The first and last ones are black copper marans pullets, and the middle one is a marans mix cockerel.

Geez, nope. Horrible timeline. Wife corrected me; Buffy, Hei-Hei and ... are actually 3.5 months, Ez and the marans are 17 weeks. Well I guess Buffy May need a new name then. A brethren cockerel of theirs was already given permanent residence down on my sisters acreage, he showed quite early; we thought these were all pullets for sure, thank you. I do have another question though, have to grab some pics in the morning. Hei-Hei has always been the runt, ‘her’ and Jet received a fair bit of extra care due to concerns and Hei-hei was a bit slow to grow.. we thought maybe failure to thrive, did question further whether her diet wasn’t enough or that she was being picked on.. but that was put to rest at least; needless to say, we always had to keep an eye on her just in case. She is the lowest in the hierarchy but doesn’t get bullied. She spends a lot of nights alone, away from the others, not avoiding just not driven to be with the others. Jet, Buffy, and the barred rocks all look out for her and check on her but she flies solo most of the time.. we feel like we have been so blind noticing today, when she finally joined everyone else in the yard and.. she’s tiny... she is half or less the size of her broodmates, yet she is heavier in comparison. She did not come from a smaller sized egg, so.. is she just a runt then or is it possible she is bantam? Is it still failure to thrive at this point? I will try to snag some pics in the morning. She is far more friendly and outgoing now, previously she’s been rather withdrawn, which is why we thought health or bullying issues.

Since they’re mixes, it makes sense that they’re different sizes. But it could just be a runt.
