In the Brooder
Hey all, still new here and new to chickens in general. We weren’t too particular about what eggs we got upon getting into the hobby early this spring, we just wanted to dive in and get our feet wet. Originally we had planned to get a random couple dozen eggs and go from there. When the pandemic blew up, a lot of previous arrangements fell through.. We made the best of it and kept moving forward and definitely no regrets. As we progressed through hatching, raising and all the additional learning of rearing up some decent girls, we watched years of other members experiences and situations in a matter of months that really made our lives so much easier. We panicked when first seeing chicks melt into the floor like pancakes and seem dead... questioned the honking geese when none were to be seen, cried upon nearly losing two (not wanting to lose any but knowing losses are part of the game). You all helped us so much without knowing, and can’t thank you all enough.
we made it this far but here is our very first active call.. who have we got?
These are our most recent acquisitions, and unfortunately did not have the opportunity to hatch them.. but maybe in the future. They are from a farm in uxbridge where a couple Landscapers sons raise their own specialty flocks atop the farms standard layers and meat birds. Apparently partridge and ginger colours don’t fair as well as their blacks and whites when it comes to demand, so we took home these older 3 instead of fresh hatched chicks or eggs. They are apparently 5wks old now and tons more personality and spunk when it comes to handling themselves as the smallest things around. The flock (aside from the 4 barred rock) has taken to them well, our roo especially; but they aren’t housed together yet (and back-up plan is ready if they aren’t accepted). I know it’s probably far too early yet to tell but I think we have one cockerel (Ginger head) and two pullets (Chipmunk/speckled head) based simply on their personalities, actions and coloration. Any thoughts?
