Partridge Silkies - Nothing else

I really think its just rolling a dice at this age lol which may be why you got no replies
Won't help I'm sure but I have female silkie x with wattles.

There was a link I saw somewhere on sexing them by the shape of their comb. A figure 8 shape meant one thing not meant the other. Can't remember which. Perhaps try googling sexing silkie by comb shape?

Silkies are hard to sex that young. Some hide out and you don't know what they are until they actually lay an egg.. or crow.

I have seen suggestions on beak sexing (based on the curve of the beak), toe sexing (longer middle toe is boy) and now comb sexing. I don't know how well any of them work - but people who use them swear by them... I will just wait for that egg...

Can any of you point me in the direction of some good Partridge silkie eggs?

I am just starting out with Partridge Silkies, but I have a dozen eggs coming from Brown Chicka Brown Cow on the PP/HE swap thread here on BYC. I believe she also sells on eBay. There are a few other BYC people who sell hatching eggs for Silkies. Seabrightmom is another one who comes to mind.

I don't see that Catdance (who has some AMAZING birds) sells a selection of only Partridge eggs.. and I thought I read on her auction on BYC that she is going to stop shipping eggs... so if she has them I would grab them up!

Have you tried asking on your "local" State thread? Might be easier to find them within your state or close enough to drive and get them. Shipping eggs is a gamble, you have to hope everybody in the postal system was having a GOOD day when your eggs go through...

I need help thinning my silkie flock. I have 2 partridge roos and 1 partridge hen. Which rooster is the better partridge silkie?

Here's the hen I'm working with:

Here's the redder partridge silkie roo (I think he may have too much red, especially in his comb, but I am a silkie novice):

Here's the other partridge silkie roo:

Here are the 2 roosters next to each other:

Which rooster should I keep? Any opinions? Thanks!

I am really new to this - but the first "Redder" rooster does not look Partridge to me. His hackle and saddle feathers are silver - and his wings are bright red. I think this is a mixed color I have seen called "Calico" before? He actually looks as if he might be Barred - that would cause the bright red on his comb and wattles too. I believe Partridge is supposed to be gold based. The second rooster looks more accurate for Partridge coloring...

However, as far as type - the first one looks to have a better stance and less hard feathers in his tail.. the second one has huge wattles... hopefully the hen will correct the wattles as she has none so will get the Walnut comb on their children (minimal wattles).

My choice would be the second rooster. There's my newbie two cents worth...

chickenmama22, I am no expert on silkies by a long shot, but I agree that rooster #2 is far more favorable. His coloring and comb are much nicer, and I think he will complement the hen well.
