What a beautiful rooster! I used to have a black silkie hen, but she was killed by a hawk last year. I miss her so much. :hit

Beautiful birds! I miss my silkie hens, my last one passed earlier this year

I want to cry when I hear someone losing their Silkies. We had to put down our sweetie 6-yr-old Black hen in August because of a bleeding ovarian tumor and it's been the hardest hen to put down at the vet's out of the 18 chickens we've cycled through in the last nearly 7 years of backyard chickeneering. Some photos of her silly poses, antics and "hair-do's."

I want to cry with you for losing your baby! Our Black Silkie was our spunkiest personality chicken and I still miss her. It was so-o-o hard us having to put her down at the vet's office because of a bleeding ovarian tumor! Today we took our 61/2 yr-old Partridge Silkie to the vet because of what looks like dry pox to me -- although I can't figure out where it could've come from. It startled me to see how fast the crusty patches formed on her little face and beak in just a couple days and I braced myself for putting her down. The vet didn't think it was serious and gave antibiotic ointment and said to give her Tylan water for a week and then bring her back for a checkup -- larynx and throat and mouth are clear so it's not wet pox but still the dry form crusty bumps look so ugly. The sweet dainty little thing is recuperating in our indoor "hospital". She loves the Homz storage box for a nest -- it comes already cut open at the front and the lid comes off for easy cleaning.
