My black Australorp has something going on with we comb. A small area was white for the last week. Today I’m noticing a larger area is white. It doesn’t look dry or flaky, it just looks like the color was sucked out of it. Like a snow cone that was sucked of its coloring. It’s been cold at night here, but nothing so crazy I would think frost bite, BUT I’m not an experienced chicken keeper so maybe that’s a possibility? I’m in Massachusetts and temps have dropped to the 40’s. We have also had a good amount of rain this past week. Any thoughts?

Were the tips ever black or brown first? I would use some antifungal cream on it daily in case of favus a fungal infection. Miconazole/Monistat or clotrimazole/Lotrimin can be found in generic or brnad name creams. If you have a Dollar Tree near you they sometimes sell the clotrimazole.

Occasionally when combs are injured or pecked, then may look black or brown and then turn white as they heal. But favus can spread and has a white caulky appearance. Here is severe case of favus, which is alao called ringworm:

Thank you. I’ll pick up some fungal cream tomorrow. I don’t remember seeing black prior to this and I’d be very shocked if someone was able to get a peck in on her. She’s the queen bee over here and she runs her flock with an iron fist. No one ever challenges Hazel. I don’t even think they look her in the eye 😂
