Passing Fancy or Long-Term Activity

To keep or not to keep the chickens, that is the question! HAHAHA! My DH had a good 3-4 dozen chickens growing up, all leghorns and a few barred rock bantams. I decided this year, my self- sufficient/reliant activity was to raise a few chickens for eggs and then meat if needed in an emergency. I started out in February getting 3 babies, we added and subtracted many (Subtracted roos we ended up getting) until we ended up with 11 pullets, all different ages and kinds. We do have 3 EE's but they all look different!

We ALL are anxiously waiting for the oldest 5 to lay, as we speak!!! My husband and I will sit on the back porch after he gets home from work and watch and laugh at the chickens. He has told me that a dozen hens are enough but we could do some bantams and ducks if we get a house with property! LOL! I think we will be keeping them!!!! My step-daughter is special needs and is very calmed by the chickens, if she starts getting upset we go outside and play with the chickens, or the follow her around the yard and peck at her while she swings. Every time she paints a new picture she has to show the chickens FIRST so they can approve of it by pecking at it! LOL!

Chickens will not only enrich your life, but they are useful at being natural bug control and if there is a natural disaster in your area, you will have eggs and meat!!!
