Could be, about the swamp cooler making it swampish. It is so dry here it's just good for my skin.

Using a sealed ice pack in a swamp cooler probably wouldn't work very well, because the cooling isn't accomplished so much by moving air over a cold surface but by the evaporation itself. Water's evaporating off the pad, but also it's getting suspended in the air and evaportating there, creating coolness inside the room. The phase-change is the cooling mechanism more than heat-exchange between cold object and warm air. Or liquid -- this is why those 'whiskey stones' and steel 'ice' cubes don't work well, but 'reusable ice cubes' that are water sealed in plastic work fine. (If sealed in plastic shaped like Hello Kitty, they may also make you The Most Interesting Man In The World.)
