Pasted up ... did I hurt her?

Ouch. Well I'm glad to report the "unpasted" bird is happily wandering her brooder this evening, oblivious to yesterday's unpleasantness. No more pasting up, either.

I had one once that had that little poop caked on it's butt. I cut it off with a pair of scissors. After I cut it off the best I could I took some warm soapy water and washed her butt then rinsed her butt off. Now you can't tell her from the others. The feathers grew back in beautifully.

I am not sure if this is true or not, I am sure someone can correct if I am wrong, but I read somewhere to be very careful about just puliing it off on very young chicksn because it could possibly pull out their insides..... Sounds far fetched to me, so if anyone knows the truth, please let us know!

If the pasty butt is over the entire vent - a tiny tiny little vent - and it is dried solid to the skin - yes, you can pull out their insides.

That is why you should wet it with warm water and soften it to remove.

I gently washed it off the couple of mine that had this then trimmed the fluff around the vent and put some olive oil there to prevent it from happening again. Seemed to work.

I am glad to know I am not posting incorrect information. I was pretty sure I had read that AFTER I yanked one off my chick.
