pastey butt heeeelp im a first timer

I always put their little bottoms under warm tap water to pinch it off a bit at a time. It may need to be pinched to break it up into manageable bits. You don't want to pick it off like a scab, because I've seen it adhere to the skin of the vent and make them bleed, as the skin goes with it- then the other chicks may pick at it- and that goes way downhill.

A bit of Chicken Poop lip balm both calms the area and it makes it waxy so future poop won't stick to the vent.

Also- DON'T ignore it. If it gets pasted up tight, it can form a cap that won't let them go, and that can kill them really quickly.

Your baby will thank you for taking the time!

I don't like to use petroleum-based products at all, so I use this lip balm because it's got lavendar (stops irritation) and beeswax and soybean oil. It accomplishes what it needs to while being appropriately named.

It cracks me up, too! My kids think I'm bonkers.

Pasty butt is usually caused by chilling. I remove it with a warm wet cloth, dry as well as possible. Also make sure they have access to fresh water and feed and make certain their brooder temp is warm enough and stable. Keep the floor bedding clean and dry. Keep them out of drafts. If they are chilled they will also pile up on each other and the ones on the bottom sometimes get smashed. Good luck!
