Pasting

Mine are 3 days old also. 4 of mine have it. There vents are clear after I clean it off but it stays on their feathers by their vents. I have been checking them daily. I think I am going to try the sugar water tomorrow.

I am new to chickens too, and at first I was absolutely panicked about the pasting up thing. I squeamishly tried to remove the poop from their bums without hurting their vents, etc. What I found worked best (which I read from a fellow BYC poster) was a Q-Tip and Olive Oil. Helps remove the hardened poop and the residual oil helps prevent future poop from sticking.

The best news is, it's very short lived. At least in my case. After the first week there seem to be no issues. But it can happen fast, so keep your eye on their little bums, but it passes quickly and then they're fine.

Do not use olive oil around their vents to help with pasting. As soon as I tried this yesterday in a little as five minutes they were pecking at each other really bad. Their little bums were raw. Immediately I put some black suave anti peck around their vent area to keep them from pecking at it. They are doing ok now. I think sometimes we can do more bad than good even thought we have the best intentions at heart.

I did notice that when I hatch my babies out, I don't have pasty butt on my chicks. I still think its the stress from shipping and being without water for several days. when we hatch them out they have water as soon as they go in the brooder.
