Pasty Butt or Just Dirty

We got our first 14 baby chicks yesterday and so far they are doing great. They are eating well, drinking, lively, and cute. This afternoon I noticed a little bit of poop on two of their bottoms. The vent wasn't clogged, but I cleaned them up with a damp paper towel anyway. I read that plain yogurt can help with pasty butt. I gave them a spoonful in a shallow dish. They promptly gave themselves a yogurt bath... not exactly what I had planned. Is there anything else I can do or watch for to keep them from getting sick?

Thanks!

What you may want to do is always make sure no poop gathers around the bird's anus 24/7. As well as yoghurt, vaseline can be smirred around the sore are to soothe the chicks. Just keep watch of the chick and make sure the rest of the flock is not pecking or bothering those two. If so, you may want to separate those two to a nice warm area with no drafts where they can rest. You can also put a cold, moist towel on the sore area to relax them. Hope this helped! Good luck, message me if you have any questions!

I checked everybody's bottoms this morning and they are all clean. One of the dirty bottoms was our most dominant chick "Thor." She doesn't take any guff off of her sisters.

Chicks are messy little things

Apple Cider Vinegar in their drink water will help with pasty butt and give them a general health boost. Mix 4-5 tablespoons with a gallon water.

It looks like they are on the mend. Thanks for the advice. They love the plain yogurt and vinegar water. They are messy little things... but not any more than my human children.
