Pasty Butt problem

Last spring I got 2 Buff Orps. Love 'em! If I remember they were a little slower than some of the others. But pasty butt will slow their growth some if it's chronic. That would mean they aren't getting correct nutrients. Are you using pine shavings in the brooder? The chick that I had with pasty butt ate on pine shavings and that will cause it too. I think the pine shavings absorb a lot of water.?
I love mine too! My fav so far. I used puppy pads for the first few days till they figured out where the food and water were, then I changed to the large flake pine shavings. They all peck at the shavings but I think all the pieces are too large for the chicks to actually eat. I check all the chicks daily for pasty butt and so far its just my poor Peanut.

You can still order 3 chicks. Postage is expensive, but Meyers is usually cheaper on shipping than most of the others.

I'm in CT, getting some in May, my minimum was 4 for my zip code and delivery time..Check their website, it tells you your minimum based on the time of year and zip code location. I ordered six and my shipping was 39.99, yes more than the chicks, but oh well:)

mmm. no I have a catalog.. But I thought it would be on their website...OH maybe click into their catalog (which is on the main page of their site),,it's in pdf form...

My new shipment has had 5 fatalities out of 26 chicks. I have a couple with the pasty butt and I picked up the Pribios last night. They are still in their first week and I am curious as to whether I give them the Sav-A-Chik electrolytes and Priobios or one instead of the other. They arrived Wed of this week. Any advice is appreciated!

5? that's very sad, I'm sorry :(

I gave mine both for the first week or so, then just the probiotics. I checked them often and cleaned them when ever necessary using a Q-tip and warm water and lots of patience. I also gave them some plain active culture yogurt a couple times with some started sprinkled on top. They are about 2 and a half weeks old now and no more pasty butt! I'm happy to say they are all healthy and happy.
