Pasty Butt

Is it common for a chick to get this repeatedly? I've read the posts stating to use Olive oil to help with cleaning, but what is the underlying cause? Orpington chicks....Thanks.

I've noticed that if one of my chicks has pasty butt once, the same chick is the one that keeps getting it. Usually 1, or 2, out of a hatch will have it, for me anyways. It can be caused by shipping stress, improper diet, incorrect temperature in the brooder, or dehydration. There might be other reasons, but those are the most common listed.

It is common for a baby chick to get pasty butt but be sure to clean it thoroughly with coconut oil dipped in the cotton buds.otherwise the chick would die because of digestion problem.and u must check all the chicks too.

I had my first chick with pasty but about two weeks ago, won't bore you with a long story, but I had to clean her twice and used olive oil (it didn't happen a third time to my relief). I attributed it to several things when I analyzed it; the food I was giving it was too humid, the oven I was using to keep her warm could have been a bit hotter than usual, and it wasn't getting enough activity (so I took it out in a sunny day to the garden and showed it how to start eating greens (grass, clover leaves and flowers).
