I have one with pasty butt. Does anyone have a good way to get that off without hurting the chick? I usually just wet a paper towel and work it off but wondered if anyone has a better way.

Almost all of mine had it, about 6 chicks. What I did was soak a cotton ball with peroxide and hold it to their hiney for a minute (it seemed to loosen it) and then took a wash rag soaked with warm water and gently worked it out. Paper towel just didn't give me the ability to massage and manipulate it out of the feathers and /then/ for the three that were very problematic I carefully cut the poop out of their fuzz which left their booties more bald so the problem didn't occur again in those chicks.

On the other hand, I also blended their crumbles with plain yogurt making a fine sort of paste for about two weeks and added Apple Cider vinegar to the water(permanent addition) - I'm not sure what exactly worked the best but after all those changes - no more poopy butts.

I usually use warm water on a good soft wash cloth, but vaseline also helps to soften things up a bit!

Oh my, I forgot to mention vaseline! I also painted that on their sore lil nether regions after all the cleaning up with a q-tip.

Got her all cleaned up.

She is smaller than the others.

I notice it is always the 'poor doers' that get pasty butt. I don't know why.

She is happer now, and vasoline on her little unpasted parts does seem like a good idea, because then she shouldn't paste up again.

Good luck with her! Hopefully she wont paste up again. It was such a problem with mine, I think, because I had them vaccinated and shipped. Of 7, 2 wound up dying(not from pasty vent!) but there was nothing I could do for them. The remaining 5 are thriving big time now and are currently trying to get better at flying.
