Pasty butt?

HI THERE everyone -

I just got my two little ones Saturday - brooding in the livingroom!!! LOL They are happy and looking good though one has a tiny HARD poopy stuck to her down - the vent looks clear = I have tried warm water with washcloth, nope... I just applied a little canola oil. I tried gently grasping and pulling...no good. So hopefully that will keep the area from sticking further.

I hate to hurt her....but I don't want it to start getting worse - they are 4 days old. any suggestions? They are under a 100watt red light and very comfortable.

I was dealing with this a few days ago. I got some great help here. I had 2 with pasty butt, one was *really* bad. I think if I had left home for a few hours my little one would have been in serious shape.

Anyhoo.....I used a warm washcloth with warm water and that helped get rid of the first babies problem. The second one was a doozy, wash cloth with canola oil really helped. I just held on to the poop with my fingers thru the wash cloth that had oil on it, that helped to soften it up. Then I picked it off gently with my fingers. She still has some stuck to her bottom, but not on her vent so I left it there. Didnt want to traumatize her any more.

Also I was told to grind up some oatmeal, not the quick kind, the kind you cook and feed it. That helps with diarrhea. That helped tremendously. Also, be careful of the umbilical cord if its still there.

Thanks for the tips - they were alone all day and are fine. The is still some poopy stuck real close to the vent and i have yet to see HER poop - I've seen the other do it but not her - I think if she was troubled I would notice. She seems just fine...I just want that poo GONE! The canola oil is gone..she is fluffy down there again, I think I will try again tonight - more oil and try and grasp it..gently --- sheesh... just like a baby!!!! LOL

AFTER watching her for a bit I saw her go - she is fine...I won't pester her again.

I always trim the fuzz away from the vent area when I have signs of a pasty butt. I think it helps...it has worked for me! I have a tiny pair of scissors for that purpose in my brooding room.

Try a quick 30 second soaking of the butt in question, then it may be soft enough to wipe away. Just a thought.

My ex was born in Penn Yan and from pics I've seen it is a beautiful area up near you guys!! Would LOVE to visit up there sometime!!

Both chicks are doing great and getting taller!! The 'poopy butt' issue is no longer....whew! But one chick is growing faster than the other....they love eating out of my hand and when the little one eats she jumps in my palm and scratches like she is in the dirt!! Too funny!!!
