Greetings from Kansas, plmonroe, and [IMG]! Pleased you joined our community! Just the words, "moving to my small cabin" sounds so relaxing! And chickens will make a great addition. BYC is indeed the place to start your journey! You might begin at the Learning Center - it is an archive of chicken raising related articles which will give you a sound foundation for your poultry pursuits!
    https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center
And check out the Breeds forum where you can consider the attributes of various breeds. Have you decide if you want only egg layers? Meat birds? Or dual purpose? Explore all that here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/products/category/chicken-breeds
And you can chat with some fellow MI poultry folks in your state thread in this link:

Best wishes on your poultry expedition and thanks joining BYC!! [IMG]

    Welcome to BYC,

Retirement is so nice and sitting around watching chickens is rewarding. I see Redsox gave you some links already so I will just wish you the best of luck with your new cabin and your flock.

G’Day from down under Patti [IMG] Welcome & Congratulations!

As you have already received links to some good starting points, I will just wish you all the best.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock when they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out [IMG]

    Patti, Patti, Patti....

Oh yes, this is the place to start your journey.

What an exciting post you teased us with. We already know
about chickens, Tell us about retiring from where? And that cabin,
    right on the lake?

You just got here, and you've got me interested. Tell us about it.
And then, we'll talk chickens later.
