We have hard clay soil so digging will be really hard. I have come across 30 of these round paving stones. thoughts on affixing the hardware cloth to the bottom of the run and then having these around the edge instead of digging?

You don't need to dig.
Just install a 2' apron around the run, use landscape pins to hold it down, cover it with soil, and your stones and you're done.

Like this but use 1/2" hardware cloth and poultry staples instead:

We have hard clay, too, plus we put the coop in a grove of trees, so tree roots make digging impossible. We spread the hardware cloth out flat on the ground, creating an apron around the coop, then put dirt and bricks on it.
