Oh wow, that's so funny, I had no idea there were so many others!
I have one who virtually never drinks except with his paw. He has many rather people-like un-cat-like habits and I have often wondered whether the paw-drinking is another one of them (after all, WE drink by bringing our 'paws' up to our faces, not by shoving our snouts down into a bowl on the ground or table)... he was only 5 wks old when I got him and although there were two other cats in the house he ended up with a somewhat peculiar upbringing.
my main 'paw-drinker' also perches on the edge of the bathtub to "pick up" the bubbles -- she is especially fond of the lavender-scented ones --
we have two dogs who occasionally 'go on a tear' and 'dig' all the water out of their five-gallon automatic waterer in the den -- I swear, they laugh while they're doing it -- drives my husband wild as he has to get out the wet/dry shop-vac to clean it up ---
I've enjoyed reading/seeing pics of the other 'paw-drinkers' --
Some cats have trouble telling the depth of water with their faces so they use their paws. My older cat will use her paw a few times until she's confident how far down the water is and then drinks. My younger cat still shoves her face in the bowl, breathes in water, and starts choking before she finds out how deep it is.
Yep, I have a paw drinker, too. Also one that will reach all the way across the water bowl and lap the water from the far side. And of course, Guinness, who drinks from the fish tank. He uses his paw there. Amber drinks from the tank, too, but she laps- and gets her tongue nipped by the cichlids in there! LOL
Our older 12 yr old cat only drank from her paw until the last 2 years or so. Now she drinks the "regular" way. We also have 3 fish tank drinkers, the old kitty can't jump up there anymore. I can't imagine why they want to drink that yucky fish water. I think they've all fallen in the tank at least once too!
my aby female always drinks that way. my aby male never does. my dilute calico female does half the time. i love watching them drink that way it is so cute.
