payback but sad.

zazouse, I showed your pics to my husband and daughter and it has been determined that we are... soooo jealous. Lucky duck.

Wow...if he is an adult roo and is really hurting your hens, GET RID OF HIM! I would never let a rooster bully my hens, even the younger roos are put in with older hens at first so they learn a little r e s p e c t for the opposite sex.

How old are your older hens?? expiring?? lol Are they that old and decrepid? I have several old hens and they look good, are still active. You couldn't tell they are old by looking at them but I know.

I let them free range about 5 hours a day, their run is 12 by 12 and the coop is 8 by 8, I think those numbers are good for 14 birds. The roo is 30 weeks old and is great with the hens his own age. As for the older hens age I really don't know, I remember the seller told me the hens were hatched in April of 2009. When I say they look rough I mean most of their back feathers are gone, they're very fat and can't run, they don't forage they mostly lay while I let them free range. I have witnessed two of them have what I think was a heart attack, they just squacked really loud jump up in the air and landed on their back and didn't even move another muscle. That was very shocking and disturbing to me. I have heard of this happening before and was told the chicken was a meat bird and was probably a commercial type bird breed for meat production only and probably given steroids.
By the way, when they are enclosed in the coop and run the roo leaves the older hens alone, it only happens when they are free ranging and being fed treats..

I miss them and their smile - it always cracks me up. Sure scares the dickens out of folks not used to it though!
