My Barred Rock hen has looked bad with severe feather loss for the past few months. The others look fine. I've dusted her with kitten flea powder (vet's recommendation) and the area with DE. Some of her bare patches are bright red and today I noticed an open sore on her back. She's still laying. Any ideas?
 
Have you seen evidence of feather mites on her? You need to use something like sevin dust or permethrin powder every 7 days, as the mites lay eggs that often. Also the nests and coop has to be cleaned out, and disposed of. The feathers may not grow back until molt, so you should use some BluKote on the reddened area, and consider using a hen apron for her bare back.
