I just went out to put my ladies in the coop for the night and noticed that Gertie (my Plymouth Barred Rock) had a bald spot behind her comb with a scrape in it, and a broken beak! The beak is cracked - a chunk on the end of the upper beak but it's still hanging on as the crack goes up one side. I was able to move it when I touched it with my finger. I've read some of the posts that say beaks grow back, but since this piece is still attached I dont know what to do? I assume I should leave it there, as she can probably still eat better with it there, but will it inhibit the regrowth if I leave the piece?
I also read somewhere that if the tip breaks off, I will have to cut the bottom to enable her eating. Yikes, I don't want to have to do that!
She free ranged all day - seeming normal. She drank water when I popped her in her coop.
I am trying to keep an eye out to be sure my other hen doesn't pick on her.
Any advice?
