Peach Peafowl any health or genetic problems?

DylansMom,A few years ago many were selling cameos as peach. I watched a trio of Cameos sell at Mt Hope,for $750. The auctioneer said they were Peach tho.I was also standing next to Brad Legg when they sold and they appeared to be spalding cameos but do not look like my peach.The peach hen who is blind came from Brad Legg,I bought her last year as a 1 year old. Started noticing late last summer she wouldn't fly up to her perch anymore and seemed to be guess stabbing at the water bowl and feed. So I seperated her off into a small pen inside my garage where she spent all winter along with late hatched peachicks. At first I thought maybe the trio of birds she was with(Cameo's) had possibly pecked at her and injured an eye but it never had any cuts or blood but rather developed a catarac-haze over both eyes.
I Spoke with Brad in Feb-March this spring about her and he offered to replace her with a 2 year old peach,which he did with no money being exchanged. I now have the blind peach hen in with my one year old birds.Each afternoon when I feed them I go get her and bring her inside to the feed and water but since she's no longer inside the small pen inside the garage,she isn't used to a new pen. Undoubtedly I should put her down but she is very responsive to my voice and I think she is figuring this out.
My Peach male came from Bigcreek in a swap deal for my Brinsea 190 incubator. He seems fine and he actually came from Deermans hen,and Deermans peach came from Sid Drenth. My concern at the time was to get genuine peach from proven breeders so noone could say they were cameos,which I also have and there is a big diffrence in color if you can see them side by side.

Thanks so much for the info. Sounds like you are a bit on the sentimental side yourself, at least where this hen is concerned.

When the light is low my cameo has a harder time seeing, but she is like 19 now, she will hesitate to fly down and I have walked over and lifted her down on several occasions. She has no problem seeing the feed and water or the other birds she's in with though. I will def. pass all of this info. along it has been very helpful. I know you have spoken several times about getting a trio of the violettas, do they seem to be genetically sound so far? I am kind of partial to those myself, wishlist material there.

With any new color it takes time for any genetic issues to surface. I havn't heard anything negative about Violettas and yes I will have them next spring barring any unforseen issues that comes up. I have Taupes and they are also new and no issues with them that I know of or have seen. I guess you gotta stick your neck out sometime if you like something?

This is what I found at the UPA site regarding the issue, as you can see, George pretty much summed up what I had also stated here, and this was posted back in 2011. The only thing I noticed was that George said it can affect purple, and so far I've not seen or heard this from anyone else. Has anyone else seen this in their purples?

It is still out there ,, It also will show up in peach and purple.. What it does is make the bird go blind and it becomes the one most picked on and can die. Mostly if it can see some or know where it will find food and water it will hang on for some time. I have both ,, a silver pied peach , and a cameo, I have not killed them as I want to see how this developes. Both have been this way for about 2 yrs now. Dont eat enough to lay but get around good and are in the same pen with a few other birds. Over the years I have lost birds to this problem adn keep outcrossing to maybe get rid of it.. A lot of people have just quit the sex link ( I call these pastel, peach, purple and cameo ) They should not be bred from as it might take a few years for this to show up in the bird.. I have some 3/4 Cameo spaldings that do not seem to be a problem .. George

I too have hen who is affected. A cameo silver pied. I bought her as a yearling about 2.5 years ago. I only have one offspring from her. He I have kept. She never layed much. And was a super nice temperament hen. She started going blind last winter. And yes the other peafowl she was with did start to pick on her. She now is with two others that do not pick at her. I house her in a warm pen in the winter. She does not perch well. She is thriving by me feeding her in a bowl she is used to and giving her eggs and baby cereal. She is now "heavy" once again. At first I wasn't sure what was wrong.

Quite sad to have this happen. And I was not aware this also occurs in peach.

I lost a peach hen to this. When I bought her she seemed fine, but a few months later it seemed she couldn't see well, shortly after I noticed this, she got spooked one day by the male I had her with and she broke her neck on the perch. That was a sad, sad day. I had always wanted the peach colour.

Pastel.. that i what I call the brown color birds , the cameo,, purple,, peach,, they are to me kinda all interchangeable with each other, these are a sex link color and you might get both or all 3 colors from the same pair depending on what was working in them.. I guess I got started doing that when the Violete was developed as it is a sex link color but it is a dark color bird , unlike any of the "pastels". I realize these are not pink or baby blue... but those are what I call "pastels" George

Thanks so much for finding all that. I am going to print that out for my friend to read. I've never heard of any problems in purples either.

I have a friend who has a couple of peach hens who seem perfectly normal, but he also has a yearling peach male who is not acting right. It looks like it could possibly be a vision problem or even neurological it has been going on since he was purchased 8 months ago, so whatever is wrong it is chronic not sudden and he seems to be otherwise healthy. Have there been any health issues reported in the peach so far? I know Cameos had some issues and the peaches come from cameos correct? Just wondering if anybody has heard anything.

Read thru this thread from the beginning, it isn't all that long and it will give you a good idea what their problems were, most of the problems with the Cameos have been bred out now.

I would not be worried about it, i have not read anywhere where it is an issue for lots of folks, now if you heard about it yearly then yes stay away far far away. Just try and know where your stock comes from, make sure they are healthy and well cared for, that is how you pick your flocks.

Free ranging them or not won't make a whole lot of difference likely. Research the breeder you're getting them from and ask if they've encountered the problem. NOT ALL CAMEO OR PEACH PEAFOWL SUFFER FROM THIS CONDITION. I've never had a cameo with this, and I've owned 5, some that I bred myself, and other from other breeders.
