Hoping someone can shed some light on this for me. I received 2 young India peafowl last fall from a co-worker who hatched them spring 2010, but didn't have housing for them over the winter. One had a backwards leg - it made it up until last month when we found it dead one morning after a few weeks of it not being real perky. The other peafowl, who I thought was maybe a hen since it's feathers seemed real plain gray, seems OK without its buddy since there are 38 chickens for it to pal around with. In the past couple weeks the peacock(?) has lost quite a few tailfeathers and just today I saw it trying to display its pathetic leftover tail plume! Does that make it a peaCOCK?! I read that peahens will display also, though... I'm confused! This guy(?) seems to have the orang-ish wing feathers. I'll try to get some pics up to help ID. How long before we start seeing eye-feathers if it is a male?

Normally they will get eye feathers when they are two, but before they are two they will start getting green in their train. Also if your bird gets a blue neck, not green blue, then it is a male. Does it have spurs? Young peahens normally won't really have spurs but young peacocks will have some little spurs. Also are the plain feathers stripped or are they a solid brown? If the bird has rust flight feathers it probably is a peacock. Pictures would help a lot.

Here is a photo of my 2010 IB male and 2 females mabe this will help you.

Thanks everybody...zazouse - judging from your birds he's a SHE!

The other one that passed away was definitely a male because he had the mottled feathers like your male in the pic. Enick has very flat gray body feathers and more of a green neck. I think the chickens peck off her crown thingies....little buggers.

I'm back to searching for a BOYfriend for her I guess! I'll still try to get a pic on here. Today not a good day for nice pics - snow, sleet, hail, rain, thunderstorm and crazy wind by us. Wish spring would show up soon! (I think my birds feel the same way!)
