Peafowl eggs and candling reposted here

I have 6 peafowl eggs in my incubator they have been in for over 2 weeks, today I finally got a strong enough torch to try and candle light and when I did I found two where clear glowly. 3 where dark in the middle glowy at the ends and one was completely dark.


Is this a good thing or bad

Dark is good, you might need a better torch (flashlight), I really like the new multibulb led flashlights. They don't get hot, hot is bad. Youu need to be somewhere as dark as possible so you can see clearly. You would like to see dark veins through the middle portion of the shell. Eventually as the egg develops, they merge and it becomes dark. You would like to see a nice clear space at the top of the egg, that is the air sac. Don't spend too much time playing with the eggs, because getting chilled can kill them. Sometimes you can see the chicks moving around in a nice healthy developing egg.
Eggs which remain clear - no veins, no darkening, no development, should be removed from your incubator so they don't burst and contaminate your good eggs

Your completely dark egg is probably the farthest along in development. Thereis most likely an air sac at the blunt end,but you may not be holding the light in such a way to see it

Only difference between candling chicken eggs & pea eggs is that peas need a strong light source cause eggs are a little harder to see through sometimes. And of course the timeline is different, peas take 28 days

When the egg is to the point of hatching, it internally pips into that air sac and then the whole egg can look dark. That is a whole 'nother discussion :-D and I need to be on a keyboard, not tapping a cell phone screen for that one

Was just wondering if the darkest egg might have been farther along and nearly to hatching, some folks incubate under broody hens before incubating, and sometimes folks find eggs after the peahen has been sitting on them for awhile.

Might just have been how you were holding the light. Helps a lot to hold the light up to the blunt end and shine the light through the air sac while slowly rotating the egg... Look for videos online to help you interpret.

If November 15 is day one, then you have 11 days to go (or maybe 10, you are ahead of us, I think), good luck!
