Peafowl Nutrition 101

Kathy, what feed are you speaking of below, a feed with fishoil in it your peafowl love?

One of the feeds my peafowl *love* has fish oil in it, enough that you can smell it! It's pretty expensive, so the peas are the only ones that get it.

It's call TMC Gamebird Mix.

It's low in protein, so I also give them a soy based 26.5% unmedicated turkey starter.

Winner's Cup game bird blends assure maximum strength and stamina. All the formulas come with essentials and plenty of extras like fish oil and viamin supplementation. Two of our outstanding mixes are Jose Guerrero and Gallo de Oro.

Game Bird Conditioner Jose Guerro Blend Super Scratch T.M.C. Gamebird Mix

Gallo de Oro

That ingredient list is not complete, I'll take a picture of the label for all to see. One can actually smell the fish oil in the products listed above!

Fish meal as the protein source smells like a can of Mackeral. Cannot imagine how strong it will be in the summertime heat while in the barrels. It's very fine, dark brown in color but has no oily feel at all.60% Protein though compared to 44% soybean meal.

Fish Meal for protein would be great but where can I purchase it? Thanks.

We feed our peas a lot of special feed we make up ourselves. DW makes fermented feed for the morning meal, I will have to check with her on what all she puts in it but I think she starts out with un-medicated turkey starter, high protein game bird food, scratch grain, cracked corn, calf manna, alfalfa pellets, and chopped vegetables. Every two or three days she will also mix a 15 oz can of mackerel in as well, not in the fermenting but just before feeding. After they have finished the FF we free feed them the turkey starter and scratch. In the afternoon DW will make scrambled eggs with chopped kale, carrots, peppers, and celery for lunch. On cold days she also adds chili power to both the FF and the omelet.

After Halloween we bought Menards out of all their leftover pumpkins so we give them one of those every few days as well as alfalfa chops. We also had a good crop of apples last fall so we treat them with a few apples every so often after they clean up the pumpkin. We also have found that they like our outdated caned vegetables and fruit, they really gobble up the Bushes baked beans! And pineapple! OMG! They really love pineapple!
