Peafowl Worming

Thank you, I think...Still feeling confused due to the comments from Birdrain92...Anything else I need to do for the peas medicinally besides worming???

Thank tou so much Gerald for you candor, really appreciated!!!

In my opinion, the best thing a pea owner can do is build a relationship with a vet who will see birds and will run fecal float exams for you. That exam normally runs from $15 to $25 to have done. If you were to have the exam done twice per year you should have a good idea if any treatments are necessary. The benefit is that you are using the right medication for the ailment and are not buying meds that are not necessary.

Some people will warn you about false negatives, but a good lab tech who knows what they are doing will not give you a false negative report.

I like this forum...But I would so appreciate a step by step out-line...When you tell someone to do only one wormer it would so helpful to tell them which one and how to use it...I'm doing my best to take care of some rescued peas, and doing my best to educate myself, but there is so much information and it can get confusing , I think we are all trying to do our best to help keep these birds happy and live healthy lives...Besides worming, is there anything else medicinally I need to give them???

Really appreciated it...Thank you

Safeguard liquid dose is 0.23 ml per pound for 5 consecutive days. The above prescription says 0.25 ml per pound, which is also perfectly fine.

Large adult male gets 3 ml
Small adult male gets 2 ml
Large female gets 2 ml
Small female gets 1.5 ml

Dose must be given for 5 days to treat all worms.

Safeguard dosage is 1 cc per 4 lbs. For every 4 lbs. you add 1 cc. An adult peacock weighs about 10-12 lbs. An adult peacock would receive 3 cc. Safeguard is a low toxicity. So don't worry bout Overdosing. You will worm peafowl for 5 days, take a 10 day break, and then worm for another 5 days. The 10 day break is the most important. The 10 day break allows eggs to hatch and get inside the peafowl, but the one parasites are too young to reproduce though. This must be given orally. You can put it in their mouth directly or on a treat they will eat quickly. Do not put it in their water. Valbazen you can worm them at 10 cc per gallon. You worm for 5 days, skip 10, worm for another 5 days. Just like Safeguard. Valbazen has a low toxicity as well. You do not mix wormers. Choose one or the other.

In my opinion, if you practice good biosecurity, prevention, and overall health you will be fine. Don't expose your flock to new birds. Quarantine new additions of your flock until you have completed worming your new additions. Quarantine can be a very useful tool with animals. Prevention would be your worming. Overall health. Reduce stress, good nutrition. Make a good relationship with your Vet.

Ivermectin for lice/mites *can* be given with Safeguard or Valbazen.

Could you explain to the OP how to administer the Ivermectin?  We apply it externally but you may be thinking something else.

I'm on the iPad now, which is hard to post from, but will post later on how much to give when giving the 1% injectable or the 1.87% paste. Can you explain how you give the 0.05% pour on?

We use an eye dropper and apply 0.50 ml divided up between the shoulders and above the butt fluff ON THE SKIN and a very little drop on the top of the head at the crest. This is for using the POUR-ON only.
