peanut allergies in schools

I just heard about a school that is having children wash their hands and rinse out their mouths 3 times a day because one child has serious peanut allergies. I understand the seriousness of this issue, but what about all the time that is spent doing this? In these times when recess and other stuff is being shortened because of so much work to learn, I just don't think that schools have the time for this. Also the parents of students hadn't even been notified of this, it was only made known to them if their children mentioned it at home.

We had an issue when my son was in first grade. It seems that a mother "forgot" to mention on her son's forms and "forgot" to mention to the teacher that he had a peanut allergy. So when he started having a reaction at school one day, she flipped a fit! No one knew he was allergic and she acted like it was the school's fault he had a reaction...go figure.

We had to make sure nothing we sent for lunch had peanuts in it. I don't understand the necessity of washing out their mouths. Are the students going to lick the student with the allergy? Maybe banning peanut products in that class and having a "peanut-free" zone in the cafeteria or classroom is a better idea.

Just don't eat peanut stuff on school days.

Frankly, if I had a child with an allergy so severe that other children have to rinse their mouths out when they are around my child, I just wouldn't have them in traditional school. If they can react even when someone else has eaten something with peanut butter, I think it would too big of a risk to take to have them around so many other children all day long.

You think that kids would deliberately breathe on a child to cause them to have an allergic reaction? You must know some messed up kids!

I think its pathetic that the parents are protesting this.

Seriously; its good hygiene to wash their hands a few times a day anyway...
the rinsing of the mouth...big deal IMO...

IMO...whats a few extra minutes to ensure someones safety w/their life?

AND what got me with these parents that are protesting; is that they are upset
because their kids dont get a valentines party...or a St pattys day party etc...with treats

well yes; yes they can...you just have to be a bit more careful about what you bring in.
they are just upset that their kiddos have to do a craft...instead...

there are MUCH more important things to worry about IMO than crafts vs junk food

and honestly; if your child cannot go during the schoolday w/o eating PB...there are issues...

as well as; this child is NOT the only one that has peanut allergies in that school...they made it
a Peanut free school due to SEVERAL kids w/the same allergy.

This child in the classroom where they are washing hands etc...deserves the right to be educated too..
she can be sent to a special school for who? for what? allergies? she doesnt meet the qualifications of spec. ed
just because her body cant handle peanuts.

I do see where the parents who are protesting get upset due to "wasted 30 min of the day" to do this washing/rinsing thing...
ok; but if they just KNEW how much time was wasted on talking, disciplining, bathroom breaks, getting kids to quiet down during
classtime..maybe they wouldnt be so upset...

One thing that really irked me when I heard this story; was a caller of one of the moms who protested said; "What if all we could afford
is peanut butter sandwiches" for lunch...well then...they'd qualify for state free school lunches...doesnt hold water IMO...

(sorry its a passionate thing of mine...I understand b'cuz for yrs we couldnt go anywhere that allowed cig. smoke in restaurants due to it
putting my dd in the hospital and we got told to STAY HOME INSTEAD..you dont need to go out to eat...etc.. -- well guess what?? They
CHOOSE to smoke..my DD didnt CHOOSE to have allergies like that...)..
