peanut allergies in schools

They do! Our school nurse needed a Doctor to sign off on the need for medication, and to help devise a 'plan' in case my son is 'exposed' to peanuts. I doubt anyone'd take us seriously if we didn't have a pack of epi-pens and a big red note from the Dr.

Lots of very reasonable concerns mentioned here. I guess one question I would be asking if my kid attended that school is what occurred to make the parents ask for such an extreme change in conditions from one year to the next. Not all of it jives with only worsening allergies and reactions. Something is missing.

eggsactly! I imagine that if a beekeeper's child wanted to bring a hive in for show and tell, that if there was a child in the classroom allergic to stings, that that would not be allowed, whereas it might be if there were none with a bee allergy. But the chances of a reaction from a child allergic to tomatoes if a classmate consumes a BLT for lunch is usually considerably less with peanut or bee allergies.

At my daughters school,
We are banned from all nuts/ nut products and all strawberries/ strawberry products.. Not a big deal, a child could die, if the come in contact.. Really not a big deal, to exclude anything that may kill a child. The teach the kids this, Unfortunately my 5 year old had to remind me about the strawberries one day when I was gonna send an apple/strawberries sauce. kids need to be taught to be tolerable of others. It's not the same as banning pork because someone may get offended, someone may die, is she brings nuts. period

With that being said, There are pics of the kids in the office, staff lunch room, gymnazime. Of child and allergy (Just annplictics sp?) There is Epi in school for child, it goes outside, with out door moniter. They know who this child is, what there allergic too, and have a walky- talky to radio for help. Just in case, bus driver also had EPI-Pen on bus, and knows which child needs it. This is the very least we could do, considering it could be our child with a life threating allergy. Period

See, its not as simple as banning peanuts. Its complicated. What should be allow an what should not. Who desides?

Its not just peanuts ether. Most foods have cooking oil in it. It becomes banning all things you cant prove have no peanuts in it.

Where is the line that it becomes to much?

Would I be allowed to pick up the kids at this school? My truck runs on peanut oil....

Here in Canada. Most lunch snacks, have a label on them "Produced in nut free facilites" If the consumer wants/needs it they will do it. My daughter doesn't get much packaged stuff. If you send whole fruits/ real meat leftovers, real veggies ect. It's not soo bad..

No Im not saying that you cant tell which is worse than the other. What Im saying is you cant treat one kids allergy different than another kids because of your opinion one being worse than the other. Where ever you chose to draw the line there will be someone that thinks they should be on the other side of it. An thats a law suite that you cant win. It ends up being all or nothing...

---------------

Yes odor is particles of gas released in to the air. But its not everything in a peanut. The protein in a peanut is what causes the reaction an it does not off gas. A study from Mt. Sinai Medical Center in 2003 specifically examined those questions.
I know there are lots of people saying the smell gets them but the doctors say no. If the doctors cant get a reaction they can detect then assuming there is one at all it sure is not life threatening.

If someone is actually grinding lots of peanuts to put actual peanut dust in to the air it may be an issue but who does that at school?

If if if if ( I am stressing the IF here as I have repeated a few times) touching or ingesting an allergen in one child only causes irritation while touching or ingesting an allergen KILLS I repeat KILLS another child, then it isn't a matter of oppinion! It is a matter of fact. One allergen is more important than the other and should be watched mroe than the other.

Just because you seem (I repeat SEEM) to take offense by the content of your posts by having to being inconvenienced so that you don't KILL a child trying to get an education along side your child, doesn't make it acceptable to kill said child just to make a point that you want to keep you're freedom to have nuts in your life those measly 8 hours a day five days a week.

I dont take offense to any of this. You are just seeing this as black an white. In the real world everything is some shade of gray.

Its not as simple as peanuts or no peanuts for one class. If it was I don't think anyone would care.

By the way, I dont have any kids.

My daughter isn't allergic to peanuts but is allergic to iodine. That means seafood of all kind and yes that means fish. Did her school go to the extreme of banning iodine products (fish) NO they flagged her account and she isn't allowed to buy fish. And yes just touching it will cause a reaction.

She will often joke that she may be Catholic but at least she doesn't have to do meatless Fridays by eating fish.

Yes we have a very odd house I am Christian, my husband Jewish and my daughter Catholic.

If you had read several of my earlier posts and had not chosen to edit out the parts where I had written that compromise is essential, repeatedly, and that IF (IF being the key word) the scent caused the deadly reaction was such an issue that banning would be necessary, if not, then a compromise would be necessary, but you kept going on about other things and picking and choosing through my statements. Thus my repeated statements and assertions in bolds and repeated usage of ifs and repeated usage of "everything in moderation"

Please go back and re-read my posts.

I do not think I can clarify any more than I already have.
