Hello everyone! I'm new to BYC and to having chickens. I received my chicks in the mail today and one looks like it has been pecked on its head. They probably got stressed out during shipping. What do I do now? I separated her from the rest but I feel bad for her and would like to see her back with the others. Do I just try to gently remove the blood with a cotton ball then put her back? Any suggestions?

I use Rooster Booster pick no more lotion on baby chicks as it tastes bad to them and they will not peck that spot. But if it is a wound I would clean it up with a little water and iodine or water and then some antibiotic ointment (no painkillers in ointment for poultry) first, and then add the no pick lotion to around that spot but not right in the wound.

I may use Blu Kote on it depending on how it looked instead of the antibiotic or iodine.

I tried to Clem the chick, but it appears what I thought was blood might just be something sticky on her head in a few spots. I can't seem to get it out. I put some stop peck on her and tried putting her back, but the other chicks went after her right away. I wonder if it's because she looked different from being wet? Put her back in the hospital box and will try again tomorrow. Hmmmm

Use a Q tip/cotton bud and warm water to remove whatever it is then blow dry her with a hair dryer to make sure she doesn't look different. Then return her to her friends, she will get lonely on her own and could fail to thrive because of it.

I'm happy to report that my lil chicky is clean and happy back with the rest of the flock. Had to use a Little baby shampoo to get the sticky stuff out, but she's eating and drinking and the others are not pecking her. I feel so much better :) thanks for your help guys!
