Pecked in the eye by a chicken??

My hen, Alejandro, liked to pick at ANYTHING the slightest bit abnormal. Whenever I went outside to sit with her, she'd clamber into my lap then start looking for ways to draw blood (or so it seemed). She would try to pry off fingernails and toenails, nip freckles and moles, and boy did she get excited if she found a scab that wasn't covered! She'd tear it off and eat it before you had time to react. You also had to be mindful of any loose buttons - I had to wrestle them out of her beak a few times to prevent her from eating them.

Never in the eye, thanks to prescription lenses, but after a close call (I've got a mole near one eye--one of my Wellies grabbed on a didn't let go. You want to talk about some swearing!), I watch them very closely.

This is somewhat difficult with Buffy, who's so needy that she'd quite happily step INSIDE your skin, given the chance.

I don't want to steal this thread but will things like buttons pass? Or get hung up in the gizzard? Had to steal back an earring the other day. Lesson learnd. Hate to say this but the i wouldn't have waited and watched for the $400.00 earring to come out in the poo. It would have been baked chicken. Sorry.

This morning I was taking photos in the coop (see blog -- link below) and was so happy that a chick jumped up on my shoulder. So I was trying to take a photo of "us" and just after I snapped it, the guy pecked my eye. -- This was several hours ago and it still hurts!

My blog entry? "Never let a chicken get this close to your eye!"

Yes! It seems a lot of Barred Rocks do this, and my girl was on my shoulder (i wear glasses so I thought I was okay!) and she leeeeaaaaannnneedd wayy over to peck me right on the white of my eye. Don't know what's wrong with it, just two little red dots on either side of my irises. Oh well, wearing safety goggles when they're on my arm or shoulder from now on!

I guess I'm not the only one, and also by a barred rock 2 days ago.

I was in the coop with the 5 week old chicks. I crouched down to finish up their watering system and one came from underneath me. Last thing I saw was a blurry chicken face. I consider myself really lucky that all I got was a scratched cornea. I go back to the dr today for a followup up visit. My vision is still a bit off, though I expect it will be back to normal when I finish healing. Doesn't help that I have to put in antibiotic ointment, so I'm looking through goop.

There's now a pair of safety glasses hanging on the coop.

I was lying down one day with some of my house chicks running around and one, it was the little roo, wanted attention. I took my glasses off and I had my eyes closed, but when he became to insistent I opened my eyes to look at him and see what he wanted. He was right by my face and he pecked me very hard in the eye. Ouch....
