Thanks you for your help. I'll have a look at how much I can increase the lip. they are quite large but the roof slopes up so they have more space once the are in. I'm just looking at nesting pads to see if this helps. maybe put a bit of bedding under the corners to help make a bowl shape and then some on top for them to mess up. biggest sheets i can find are smaller that the boxes though as I made the boxes 14" square as they are quite large chickens.

Try making your own nest pads. I save empty feed bags, put in a sheet or two of bubble wrap, and fold them to fit snugly in the nests (as seen in middle box). Then top with bedding of choice:

a piece of turf cut to size and placed upside down works too, and was the traditional lining for a nest box.

I can report that since putting a nest pad in there have been to eggs broken in the nest box. Thank you all for your advice.
