Hi all,

New to BYC with many questions! We just bought a small farm and are about to order our first chicks. We've never had chickens before and, after much research, are drawn to Dominiques and also Australorps. My question is would these two breeds get along together? I'd love to have a mixed flock with a few of each, but as newbies if this is likely to create any problems then we'd probably just settle on one or the other. Any input you could provide would be most welcome!

Thanks!

The dominiques are one of the most docile breeds I’ve ever been around I don’t see why you would have any issues both breeds are very docile in my experience they will sort out the pecking order and be fine. Good luck on your new flock

We've got some of everything and then a bunch of mixes. Just about every color and pattern you could think of- they all do fine together. The biggest thing you can do to promote peace in your flock is give them plenty of SPACE, way more than you think they'd ever need. If you can do an odd shaped pen, like a "C" or "U" - not a rectangle - so chickens that may be lower in the pecking order can go around a corner, out of the sight lines of the more dominant birds, that can go a long way.
