Pecking the eggs?

These days when I go out to collect the eggs, I always notice that one, always a brown egg, has a little indent on it, like a hen pecked it. It almost looks as if a baby chick JUSSSST started pipping, except we don't have any roosters.

Why would a chicken be doing this? We offer the oyster shells free choice.

Could this turn into egg eating?

It could. Or it might be someone is stepping on them, especially if more than one hen uses the same nest. Is the eggshell a little thin? There are several reasons they can be thi that oyster shell won't fix. Or, could it be a defect in the egg? Read here:
