I have three pretty girls and one has really started to hurt another by pecking her in the head. She is almost bald and has many scabs. I decided to separate the offender from the other two for awhile. My daughter calls it chicken jail. The "jail" is right beside the coop and she can see the other two girls. Plenty of shade, water, and food. How long should I keep them separated? When I went to put her in (we are using a dog crate for the time being to shut in in from the wildlife) she was so mad. Any suggestions? Thanks much!

Sounds like you are well on your way to having a nicer chicken once she's out of jail! I'd give her two weeks at the least! Then watch her because she'll be on probation. Hopefully she'll learn her lesson and be lower on the pecking order.

If you want to reset the pecking order, separate completely, out or sight and hearing. If they can see and hear each other they don't really think they've split up.
