I have a choco. lab named Molly. She doesn't touch the adult birdies and they free range in my yard 24/7 with her. One of my teenagers died of heat stroke, and she brought me her body, with not on scratch on her. It's her job to find the dead or dissapeared birds (sorry for grammer I couldn't think of a better word). She once helped me find a peachick who flew into the woods and got lost, she pinned her down and brought her to me with out a scratch. "bird dog's" instinct tells them to pick up the bird without pucturing the body. But a Dog dog's instinct tells them to kill it. It's just a battle of which is stronger.

My husband's grandfather's dog brought this chicken back from romping in the woods repeatedly. He didn't hurt it, just retrieved it. They'd take the chicken out of the dog's mouth and it would go bagawking back to it's home. The dog would leave again, bring back the chicken. They finally went home so the chicken could have a break. LOL

My dogs are more bratty and I think they sometimes get jealous...

The dog is about 4-5 months old and hasn't started her "formal" puppy training yet. Until now we had just been throwing her out of the enclosure when we ound her in there with a few firm words. Of course now she is NOT NOT NOT allowed in at all. Any help or advice you'd have would be greatly appreciated

At that age that dog is just a baby yet. She hasn't been trained and she doesn't know any better. If you wait to see if there will be another mauling, well yes there will be. Fencing needs to be dog proof until she has some maturity and training on her. It's far to much to expect her to leave such fun things as chickens alone at her age. With time and training she may become good with chickens, or she may never be trustworthy. My own dogs are pretty good, when I'm around, I never trust them alone with chickens for a second.

Ohhh, I'm so sorry. Our animals are family too, and I know how much it hurts to lose one. Your dog is beautiful, and hopefully will be able to redeem herself when she's trained. I have an elderly lab (Howard, age 13) and he is wonderful with little animals - and little people too
