At what age should you put peepers on pheasants. I have chicks that will be 6 weeks old the first of next week Thanks for the help

I Dont Do It Until They Peck. Once An Offending Bird Is Caught Any Time After 6wks Of Age Works.... Altho Imo Its Easier The Younger They Are....

LIKE HORSE BLINDERS BUT FOR PHEASANTS.... ITS A SMALL PLASTIC BLINDER WITH A LITTLE SADDLE LIKE DEPRESSION ON THE BOTTOM, IT SITS ON THE BIRDS NOSE AND HAS A PLASTIC ROD WITH A FISH-HOOK LIKE BARB ON 1 END THE ROD GOES THRU THE PEEPER- IN 1 NOSTRIL, OUT THE OTHER NOSTRIL AND THE FAR SIDE OF THE PEEPER --- THUS IT IS PINNED ONTO THE BIRD, OR CAN BE APPLIED WITH A C SHAPED RING THAT IS BENT OVER THE OUTSIDE TO THE POINT WHERE BOTH ENDS ARE IN 1 NOSTRIL OR THE OTHER. GO TO WWW.CUTLERSUPPLY.COM AND LOOK UNDER PECKING AIDS, THEY SHOW SOME REALLY GOOD PIX. THE IDEA OF IT IS THAT IT BLINDS LITTLE MR HAPPY SO HE CANNOT SEE DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF HIS NOSE AND CAN THERE FORE NOT BE ABLE TO PECK HIS PEN MATES! THEY SOUND VERY TORTUROUS, BUT ITS REALLY NOT DIFFICULT AND RARELY INFLICTS ANY DAMAGE TO THE BIRD. BUT THE RESULTS ARE SUPER! FEW IF ANY MORE INJURIES TO THE PEN MATES.

PEEPERS ARE REMOVEABLE AND RE-USEABLE WITH NEW PINS OR C SHAPED RINGS. SO IF YOU CULL OR SELL YOUR BIRDS THE PEEPERS CAN BE SAVED AND REUSED!

WELL PLEASE EDUCATE US! THATS WHAT WERE HERE FOR!!! I LOVE LEARNING ANY AND ALL NEW TRICKS AND IF ITS BETTER FOR THE BIRD THEN BY ALL MEANS I'M IN!!!

We had one of our chicks that started picking, I caught her right in the act with blood on her beak. I had heard that if you nip the point of the top beak it stops the picking, so we nipped (with dog toe nail clippers) about an 1/8 of an inch off. There was no blood from the bird and it stopped the picking.

I also don't like them. Generally it occurs from having too many birds in a too confined space. Since I raise pheasants for aesthetic purposes more so than say bulk for hunting....I tend to think a disfigured bird, or birds with things on their heads just take away from natural beauty. They do serve a purpose, and they do work.

Do a search in the archives, discussed many times here before.

Alternatives: space, enrichment (huge list of items, even a cardboard box or a toy ball will work wonders!!), aviary plants (grasses, shrubs, trees, etc). If you feel you have to use them to keep pheasants, don't buy pheasants.
