Peeping to Pipping Question

Yes, I'll definitely return the chick to momma if it fluffs up and is OK - maybe tomorrow. The two other chicks are with momma, so it'd be nice for this chick & them to be together.

I'm feeling a bit more optimistic. I can see now that the yolk was completely absorbed & any hint of bleeding is gone. There's also some movement & peeping. With any luck, a bit of rest & repair & he/she will soon be chillin' with the other peeps.

A great example of the right time and situation to intervene. The chick would probably never have hatched being 'breech' in the egg, and would have eventually suffocated or tired and died from exhaustion.

Being 'breech' and unable to hatch is a positioning issue, and I would argue NOT a health or hardiness issue.

Good for you for getting a healthy chick out - give him some time and warmth until he fluffs out and then give him back to momma chicken.

Thank you! He really does seem to be perking up. I'm so thankful for the responses. I probably would NOT have acted without them - so warm thanks to all for your excellent advice!

Yes, pic of miracle chick & 2 other hatched babies will be on its way post-fluffdom tomorrow.

Laura congrats for the rescue of the chick!
It sure sound like this little baby will make it and I hope it does, I always peep at the chicks to keep them excited and talking back to me, you may try that as well.
Best of luck and way to go!

I have a silkie egg in my incubator who is breech, I will have to help it out, nothing new to me though I help alot out but not because they are lazy I dont think.

Anyway keep us updated and share some pics when you can!

Just wanted to post a quick update that my little chick remains healthy & is now completely fluffed up. I took some pics last night & a couple more just a few minutes ago, and I'll try to figure out how to post them after I get my kids to bed. The chick looked great this morning - was steady on its feet & peeping up a storm, so I put it in with its mom just as I left to drop my kids off to school. When I returned after running another errand, I found it in not very good shape - she had the other 2 under her, but this one was left on its own. I don't know if that was intentional or what the issue was, but it really freaked me out given all that I went through to get it here. Thankfully, a few minutes after I put it back in the incubator, I heard the same sweet peeping noises. I probably won't put it back with mom again, unless its on a day that I can sit and monitor things for several hours. Since I do want it to have some companionship with the other 2 peeps, I'll probably put them all in a brooder.

Thanks again to everyone for their extremely helpful feedback. It saved my sweet chick's life. Hopefully I'll get some peep pics up later tonight.

Best,
Laura

If you do put it back, i think i would do it at night when mom is sleeping, it would be hard though to keep an eye to make sure shes nice to it, so it will probably be better off with you

will be one tame chick!
If you wanted to try again do it while she sleeps.
Good Luck

You should always give the chicks to the mama at night. It doesn't seem like anything changed for the mamas then. She won't do anything to the chick after she goes into roosting mode. And the chick will stay under her since it's dark. Then in the morning everything should be just normal to them. I would check first thing in the morning though.
