PeeWee is sick! UPDATE..FINAL Necropsy Results Page 6

Thanks so much! He's just very lethargic, but is eating and drinking. I do plan on giving the Valbazen. I ordered it from First State, so hopefully it will get here soon. He is rapidly losing weight also. His eye is opened slightly this evening after the VetRx treatment earlier, but still doesn't look well. It's not swollen nor does it have pus. It's a thin drainage coming from it. His face is practically white in color. He he is very slow moving. I'm hoping that the Wazine along with the Frontline and VetRx will get him over the hump until the Valbazen arrives. He just seems to be wasting away in front of me. Oh, there is no discharge from his nostrils nor is there any foul smell. I'll continue with the scrambled eggs. At least the ones I'm supposed to toss will go to good use! Thanks for your help!!

It sounds like his eye may be on the mend, so why the continued deterioration? I am wondering if he is not more emotionally ill than physically ill. I hate to ascribe emotions to chickens, but sometimes a cockerel that gets a beat down from the head roo will show lethargy and withdrawal, as well as physical injuries.

How is he doing today?

There's something going on with him, but I'm not sure what. Last night I dosed him again with VetRX and put him in a nest box that's not being used and that's where he stayed. I went and got him this morning and he was still where I put him. He's pooping, and most look normal, but there are horse stall pine pellets in that box and some are wet, like some of his poo might be watery. I had to physically pick him up and take him to the waterer. He drank plenty of water. His wings are hanging lower now and he's literally as light as a feather and incredibly bony. He's not sneezing, he's not wheezing, nothing other than his eye, rapid and I mean rapid weight loss despite eating. I've got an egg that was laid this morning in the kitchen that I'm boiling for him. I thought I'd change it up a little.
He didn't really seem to get a beat down, but the head roo does chase him on occasion. He's been bloodied before by this guy, and it's PeeWee that at that time picked the fight. I thought maybe he'd gotten pecked in the eye, but I don't know. I've been all over BYC and the net and another thing that might come to mind is eyeworm, but he wouldn't let me pry his eyelids apart to look. I know that in order to get eyeworm he'd have to come in contact with cockroaches and in the 20 years I've lived in this house I have never, ever seen one. I was born in Texas so I'd definitely know one if I saw it.
I hadn't isolated him because I thought at first eye injury, then possibly lice/mites/worms, and maybe the lice/mites/worms is still the problem. He's a little guy so maybe more susceptible to weakening from those things. I just treated everyone accordingly. If he were showing symptoms of anything else, he'd have been inside very quickly and on the appropriate antibiotic. But I don't know what in the world is going on with him. I'm going to try to look inside his eye again when I bring him in to eat his egg. I'm at such a loss here. I was hoping the Frontline would help, then I was hoping the Wazine would help..I don't know how long it takes. Now I'm praying for that Valbazen to show up before it's too late. I didn't realize my order there would be "pending" for 3 days before being shipped. My credit card was finally charged last night though, so hopefully it's on its way.

Send a PM to dawg53. He has experience with eyeworm. It has some pretty distinctive characteristics from what he has told me. He can clear up whether PeeWee has it or not.

I'll do that, thanks. I did go through some of his threads about it yesterday while searching through here. I'm also going to go ahead and isolate him since I've given the entire flock the Wazine. Anything else I do to him now would be done for him and him alone, until the Valbazen gets here and I dose them all individually. I sure appreciate all of your help!!

I doubt it's eyeworm, otherwise your roo would be scratching his eye alot (you havnt mentioned that) and would eventually cause blindness. You can see eyeworm, they are white in color, very thin and can be about 1/4" long. However, if you see them, mix equal parts of water and valbazen, then flush the eye with the solution. Then dose him orally 1/4cc valbazen undiluted. Repeat this procedure again in 7-10 days.
If he's not scratching his eye, and once you get the valbazen, go ahead and dose him 1/4cc orally undiluted. Repeat dosing again in 10 days. While you're at it, dose all your birds 1/4cc.
It sounds like you're also dealing with lice. Dust him with sevin dust, avoid the eyes and nostrils, repeat dusting him in 7-10 days.
Even though he's a roo, I still dont recommend feeding eggs with wormer residue back to him. Other than extending withdrawal times, there's also the possibility of worm resistance to the wazine in the future and you dont want that to happen.
Provide him chopped or scrambled egg mixed with buttermilk to eat for several days. The eggs are extra protein to help rebuild his strength and buttermilk is a better probiotic than yogurt, easier to absorb and will help build up his immune system.

Thanks Dawg. I haven't seen him scratching his eye at all. I did isolate him just now in the garage with straw in a rubbermaid container. I sprinkled Sevin in the straw and tossed it around. I gave him the chopped up egg, but he only took a bite, so I can scramble him a different one. I also put some chick starter/grower in with it. He normally eats Flock Raiser, but I thought maybe the other stuff might give him more nutrients?? Not sure on that one. I'll go get buttermilk as well. I appreciate you taking the time to read through this and give me your opinion. Just wish that Valbazen would hurry up and get here!!

This is PeeWee's bad eye. And pale face. His comb looks a little pinker than it is. I rubbed VetRx on it last night before bed, so it's a little oily looking.
In the front corner there is a little droplet of cloudy thin liquid.

This is his good eye, in comparison.

His comb also looks like it's shriveling at the tips.

Healthy PeeWee

I just went out to the garage to check on PeeWee again and I picked him up. As soon as I did, he regurgitated some fluids. I set him down on the grass and he picked at it a little. He can't walk without dropping a wing for balance. He's been eating and drinking all day. His crop seems normal to me. I did get an opportunity to take a couple more pics of his eye. It's bubbly and dripping clear fluid. No smell to him other than a "food" smell..best way I can describe it..like his feed. I'm at my wits end.

Valbazen still isn't here.
