Pekin drake with wet eye for ~4 weeks?

I have one drake and one duck who had been living outside in a makeshift tile crate for maybe two months - pine shavings, play sand under the waterer, dirt underneath it all. Got out almost every day for pool time, and added pine or fully cleaned the cage often.

Maybe a month ago I noticed his right eye looked a little wet, and it gradually got worse over the following couple weeks. Research here indicated that without any other symptoms it was possibly a grain of sand in his eye, and that once we got them moved into their larger, permanent home, it would go away.

Fast forward to a week ago and his eye looked like this (I had just sprayed both eyes so wetter than typical). Kate in back/left, William front/right. Still no other symptoms as far as I could tell - seemed to breathe fine (without a stethoscope), other eye was fine, ate, drank, and acted fine. But since it didn't get better I dropped $30 on the Veterycin pink eye spray in the hopes of battling any infection, or flushing out whatever was causing issues. I've sprayed it twice a day, sometimes 3.





Yesterday my bf and I drove from FL to MD on our way to work in MA for the summer. Today his mother said his other eye is starting to get a wet ring around it.

My duck is fine, absolutely no symptoms whatsoever.

Any help on what to do next would be great. Thanks!

Do they always have water available to wash their faces when they have food?

They always had a waterer - typical chicken style, gal size - in the tilecrate, which got cleaned out twice a day. It sat in a stainless steel kitchen pan which collected the splashed water but it wasn't deep enough to cover their nares though. They were able to clean those out during pool time basically every day.

Now they are in a 4'x10' home with cup waterers or fresh water and a small bucket they can stick most of their head in for cleaning and playing. That only gets cleaned out once a day now though since my bf's mother doesn't work at home.

Water is from a garden hose.

I had one do this.... i treated it and eventually it outgrew the issue, i found it mainly fixed itself after the birds could swim and often.. for some reason the eyes were just weepy... i would keep a close eye(lol) on it routinely keep it clean and ensure they have plenty of access to water deep enough to clean their eyes.

Here a concept that is neat! yes, this still uses a chicken waterer BUT the pan below allows water deep enough to clean nares & eyes.
