Pekin Duck Club!

Question!

In the past few days, my crew of five have learned where the pond is and are spending their days there. I put them back in their yard at night, with water and Flock Raiser. So my question is - can they eat enough from the pond to not need feed? The pond is large, and has tons of duckweed, minnows, and any other thing they might want. They are 5 weeks old.

I don't know about feed around a pond. But I do know my 4 Ducks are completely free ranged and I leave out a small bowl of feed and fresh water by their kiddie pool. sometimes the small bowl is empty sometimes it is still half full. Being free ranged they eat a lot while wandering about. With yours being 5 weeks old I would still offer them feed daily.

Little Ying had her broken leg and with extra care like picking her up out of the nest boxes and moving her to the water, Niacin, and extra protein she eventually healed from her injury. It was bad to. She laid around all the time and hardly moved. that is just the way they heal. They take it easy and then bam one day they are ten times better. Good luck with your lil one.
That's great to hear!!! Vet wrap is also really helpful in a situation like that - kind of gives them a "cast".

My largest male pekin, Captain Donald Peck the first died on Thursday July 25th, of totally unknown causes. He had no cuts or anything, jst lying there dead, with a little bit of blood spilling out of his bill, beautiful, healthy happy 8 week old duck one day and dead duck the next

down to only three and I hate having odd numbers of animals it just cannot be done :(
Oh, so sorry... I would be devastated too. Sounds like maybe whatever happened was quick...

X2 - free-ranging will really be great for them, but at such a young age, I would still supplement to make sure they are getting all they need for proper growth.

4 of my staggered hatch birds were due on the 31st, all 4 pipped on the 29th, and 3 of 4 hatched on the 30th. The 4th one has been in the same position for 3 days now. I can hear him still alive moving around and stuff, but he's been there a long time. Do you think he's stuck? Should I help him out or should I wait longer? Just don't want him to exhaust himself since he's been there for 3 days.

I have a Peking and he can only walk a few steps without plopping on the ground. It seems like he doesn't have enough strength to hold his own weight. He constantly falls over when walking. What is wrong with him?

Just w ondering how come my pekin freacks out if his legs don't touch the bottum of the ground in his pool.
Freaks out how? He jumps out of the pool? Screams his head off? I have noticed that our girl is not especially fond of deep water in her pool unless she is in the mood for diving, otherwise she stands on a block or gets in the small pool.

Did you check for boils on the bottom of the Pekin's foot? they get lots of foot injuries from twisted ankles to cuts and bruises. Then they get weak and need to be nursed a bit. We got the non-flushing
Polyvitasol and Niacin, thanks to some on our list. Our duck Sweet is still needing extra attention after a foot injury.
