Pekin Duck Club!

Question, does beak color determine sex of ducklings?

Would be nice but no. Unfortunately not.
Depending on age you can vent sex them (first 5 days), wait for the voice change to set in (4-6 week old) or simply sit and wait til after they molt the first time (about 3 months old) and wait for a drake feather to show up, which means you got a boy.

Ok another question. TSC was out of pine flakes and had straw. Is that acceptable bedding for me to use with the babies at 5 weeks old? Thank you! :)

New here (This thread) wife just picked up 4 Pekin ducklings. Had a nice pair when we started poultry but froze themselves. Their daughter we had for 2 years before predator got her. She decided on 4 with hopes that we will at least get 1 pair. We got lucky 1st year buying 2 and getting 1/1. She wanted to stack her odds. I do all the poultry/cattle and most of the horse care here but she misses her pair (Riff & Raff) and wants to have some again. Hoping for a great experience with Pekins again. Last few years been good with Rouens until last fall, and about 1 1 /2 months ago. Still have duck, 7 babies from the pair (And about a dz. in bator) that survived the predator last fall and this winter (Horribly harsh). Probably secure them this fall winter before frost hits (I hope).

Welcome 5 acre! Yes I hear you on the harsh winter! I think our chickens only made it cause they bunked in with the ducks. Lol. They still sleep together but go out foraging different ways. Just gotta keep the chickens away from the highway...

Thanks our ducks have always bunked with the chickens. Hens will follow the ducks to pond but just to the edge. My Rouen duck is keeping near the garage where we have 14 ducklings brooding. Hoping to have our Pekins turn out as well as our last couple we had.
