Pekin Duck Club!

Hello all! Just ordered a jumbo Pekin from Metzers Farm. I chose the jumbo because for temperament it said "very calm." This afternoon though I came across a discussion with many people saying not to get the jumbos for pets? Because of leg issues? Does anyone have any experience or any advice? Was thinking about calling on Monday and seeing if I could switch to the smaller guys if it seems to be the common recommendation. Thoughts? Thanks everyone!
I have the jumbo pekin and he is the sweetest duck. He does have hip issues. When he turned around 4 years old he began having problems walking. I give him the glucosomine tables for his hips each day. He still can't walk very good but he gets around with some effort.

I have an 8 week old "jumbo" Pekin I received from Ideal (she was supposed to be a "regular" Pekin). I have not had any leg issues. She walks kind of stilt legged but can keep up with the other 6 I have. She doesn't seen any calmer than the regular Pekins she is just very talkative.

I'd say try it, just be prepared for how large she/he will get. I know even at 8 weeks she is larger than my other 2 adult Pekins which are about 1 year old.

The "jumbo", if that is what she is, is in the back standing by the black ducks. This was about 2 weeks ago. She isn't a pure white. I was told that a Jumbo doesn't get the real white until their 2nd molt. We'll see.

I would be sure she gets enough B vitamins and has lots of opportunity to float in water.

Brooder-temperature until she's 2 months old or so, and always supervised constantly till she's fully feathered.

Got the coop in today . It's not finished needs improvements . But safe for the night. All 5 pekins went outside and chickens. Hope my dogs dont tear it intell we can make improvements.still no baby's on my Swedish girls and mallerd boy.

The Crazy Gang are finally getting it. They are learning how to be ducks!! We upgraded their pool on Friday so now they can actually swim, they have started nipping at grass around their pen and best of all they have finally figured out how to put themselves to bed when the sun goes down which saves us having to rodeo our ducks.
Loving these Crazy birds!!!

Oh and still trying to name them, we now have at least 2 that sound like they are quacking the rest still kind of squeak or cheep so who knows?

Glad the swelling is down a bit, that's better than it getting worse... I asked because someone said on another thread that a certain lot of the Manna Pro feed was voluntarily recalled for having too much sodium/salt in it... just wanted to mame sure that wasn't it...

I hope the vet can help ghe poor little one out... will keep my :fl for all of you...

Oh, and the duMor with brewers yeast is ok... personally, I prefer the Purina Flock Raiser... it has better balance of what ducklings need... :)

I took him to the vet yesterday and was told that he had a disease that was in his blood stream and affected his joints and was painful and will progressively get worse. I made the choice of putting him down. I did everything i could and if he wasnt in pain i would keep doing everything for him but i coupdnt stand to see him in pain. The diease was explained to me like rumatoid arthritis for ducks. It is not contagious however another one of my ducks is starting to show similar problems except his leg is turning in. I hope its not the same issue. Thank you for replying and for your help.

@duckies1230 @Juliebird

The Pekins are here! Due to low humidity (20%!!!) I had to start assisting. Banti was the first. She was easy to expose her face. She was bleeding some, so I put her down. Then there was Christopher. Chris was malpositioned, but okay other than dry. I got him mostly out too. It was getting late, so I made sure they were moistened (and the humidity was way up in the incubator!) and went to bed. When I began Banti, I got her head out. She laid it on my hand, and rested.

I worked until I saw more blood. Then it was Chris's turn. It was hysterical! He was kicking my hand with his tiny little webbed feet the whole time I was loosening him from the shell. The more he uncurled, the more his feet went scrambling, and he kicked me!

Sooooo precious!!
I am having problems uploading more photos right now.

As I was investigating the situation.Banti is closest to the rocker.

Giving up for the night. Banti in the back again.

Banti (I cut out the part of the picture where her shell was still partly on).

Chris. The blood isn't bleeding. It was from the shell. Don't worry.

Chris

Later on, when I finished freeing Banti. She was bleeding due to the shell getting torn from her stomach. Not dripping blood, but I held her a while. I wanted to be sure she was okay.

Chris was fluffy-ish by then.
