Pekin Duck Club!

First, I hope you're feeling better real quick, DenverDucky! Real neat thread you started here! I think it is great to see everyone's Pekins and read about them!

I took my 2 youngest Pekins outside to play for the first time yesterday. I need to name them. One is real calm, serious and mature acting.... the other is the opposite...lol. They had a blast I think out there! They played in the water, ate old dried leaves and ran around. I got in there and played too. I was soaking wet with water from the splashes.....lol.

























My older Pekins do this thing were they puff out all their new feathers and they look twice as big and fat as they really are...lol. It's funny!

Just put me down as Duck Mama of 6 Jumbo Pekins and 6 Rouens! I haven't named any of them yet

. My hubby saw my ducks for the first time in a few days... states he's going to have nightmares now, because the pekins are so huge... imagines the biggest two will be pushing their head through the floor boards (they're in the basement) looking for food, they're so big. He's used to pekins... just not the Jumbos!

First I want to say that I have made more edits to the Members List, but I know I'm still missing a bunch of ducks on the list! Thanks for the well wishes and for all the great pics! It's exciting to see them grow, except that it goes all too fast. Thanks you also for the encouragement. It's been so fun getting to meet other Pekin owners and see how other ducks live. So many nice members

WOW - DenverDucky!! That has become quite the list! Lots of Pekin-lovers!

Hi. I would like to be added to your Pekin Duck Club. I have four ducklings that are about 4 1/2 weeks old and don't know what I am doing. Mostly, we are just learning as we go so I could use some support and encouragement. We plan to build a pen this weekend b/c hopefully the evening temperatures will be warm enough that I can let them stay outside. We have been keeping them in their cage on our back deck during the day and bringing them in at night (a hassle). I love my duckies but was not prepared for how to care for them. I just didn't realize that they would need so much protection from cold and predators. We have water in our backyard from an inlet and my hope is that one day they will come and go. Any suggestions on building the pen? We have a fenced in yard but I have seen foxes in my neighbors yard. What should I use for them to sleep in? Sorry for so many questions.

Welcome! If you have some time, read through this thread as a lot of information has been shared. They don't really need too much protection from cold once they are completely feathered out, but they will need protection from predators. Depending on where you live will determine how to build your pen due to the types of predators you have in your area. The only thing we really have to deal with is snakes, coyotes, skunks, and hawks. Our dogs roam the yard at night to keep all those critters out but I still used hardware cloth for the bottom 3 feet of their run. The rest of the run is chicken wire. Mostly I just tried to deter any critters from digging under. As for a house, even though we live in Arizona, it does get to single-digits and even 0 degrees during the winter and all we provided for our 4 ducks is a little "dog-house" type shelter, full of straw and/or pine shavings. Unless it is actively raining or snowing, they always choose to sleep out in the open. They would even wake up with frosted backs in the morning, or I would find them trying to swim in ice cold, half frozen water - LOL. So, yeah, they don't seem to mind the cold. In the wild, a lot of ducks actually sleep in the water all night as it's a safe place from predators. Brrr...
The most important things that I can say that ducks need is niacin and deep enough water that they can dunk their heads into. Niacin is an essential nutrient for their well-being and they need deep water to be able to wash their eyes and clear their "nostrils".

When we built their house we put a small ramp going up to the door and the ducks will not use it. Every night we go out and pick up the ducks and stick them in their house. They have been in their pen now for 2 1/2 weeks. Will they eventually go in on their own??

Bubbles, Pebbles, Tank, Limpet, Waddle( x breed), Ellen and Harvey! I also have three Indian runners but they don't count here and 11 Pekin ducklings who I will upload later! Yes they have their very own pond which is around 9 foot diameter. Thank you for welcoming me! And in case my wordless message isn't clear... I would love to be in the Pekin Duck Club Please!!!

Ours very rarely gets into their house on their own either. But every night we round them up, they walk in on their own, and we lock them down.

Depending on where your ducks are located (enclosure type) depends on whether it is safe for them to stay out. Even though they seem to see very well at night there are still predators around here that can get them. DH killed 2 possums last month and we have stray cats running around the neighborhood. We rather not take any chances so we lock them up tight.....plus they seem more rested and full of energy when they don't have to be on alert all night. Butter explodes from the house every morning with all her feathers raised, announcing to the world in her loudest voice that she has arrived...Crazy Butter

Are Pekin's pretty quiet? My Khaki is a loud mouth and our baby Pekin barely makes a noise. Peepers is two weeks tomorrow!
