Pekin Duck Eggs

Mine are always dirty because they lay them on the coop floor, I tried a nestbox but they never used it.

Mine are dirty sometimes. I keep a lot of hay bedding in the areas where they lay, so that cuts down on the mud and dirt.

I have nest boxes all along the wall of the duck house with clean straw. They refused to use them though so I go buy 18 bales and put the bales 2 high along the other wall as individual areas. I put lots of straw on the ground for nests. They dug out the straw and laid on the ground. I put more straw down and they went to another corner and dug a hole in the gravel and lay there. Mine like to dig around in the straw but when it comes to laying they want a hole in the ground. The chickens always lay in their nests. Eggs are clean.

I was just having this discussion w/a friend this morning.

Here is what my ducks (and chickens) use.

and this is how my eggs come out.

I had one younger hen that was laying her eggs on the floor but she's finally figured it out and is laying them in the tub now.

I do have a question about the *bloom* on duck eggs. If you have a dirty egg can you wipe it off w/a damp paper towel or will that remove the bloom? I've wiped one down and it still appeared to have a filmy look (my younger hen has a filmy look to her eggs). Logically I tell myself if a duck is wet and gets on her eggs her feathers might clean the filth but surely they don't remove the bloom? Just wondering.

My ducks lay in there straw, and the eggs are clean, unless they lay in the mud

I sure wish I could get mine to lay in their nest boxes or just in the straw. Mine want even go in their nest boxes anymore and the straw I put in corners for them they scratch it out and wallow holes in the dirt to lay. Sometimes they just drop their egg in the middle of the floor.
