Peking Duck Eyes

Ducks lack efficient tear duct glands so rely on deep water to lavage debris, and bacteria from their eyes; when water is not provided often enough, or the bird is not getting in the water enough, debris, and bacteria will accumulate, and as an inflammatory response the eye will start to produce foam. The foundation of foamy eye treatment, should consist of allowing the duck to dunk his head in deep water during the day - in addition, environmental conditions should be free of pollutants (smoke, ammonia, dust, etc) that may be irritating the eyes as well.

Oftentimes foamy eye will be due to injury, so watch out for fighting amongst the flock that may be predisposing the bird to develop the foamy eye.

For the eye, start by flushing it well with saline, or eye drops, afterwards, use a damp warm towel and wipe off any gunk visible externally. An ophthalmic ointment such as Terramycin can be applied twice a day to the eye to address any bacterial overabundance.
