Pellets are Treats!

The exact same all-flock pellets I was putting into their feeders, when tossed into the bedding under the roost spurred a flurry of scratching and digging that turned the bedding nicely today.

Apparently, if it flies through the air and lands on the ground it HAS TO be a treat in my birds' eyes.

I can't wait until mine are that excited about flying things! They still scatter in fear when something is tossed in their general vicinity. Maybe I should start with a more irresistible goody to show them the flying things are tasty? They are starting to show a little interest when I sprinkle grass clippings around the run, but grass isn't very toss-able! This is where an older bird would come in handy, to show these kids how to act like chickens

A lot of people get carried away and challenge this notion, but chickens can be quite dumb It's okay, we still love them anyway!

Mine HATE pellets, it doesn’t matter how I serve them, tried the flying through the air trick, they do run and peck at them, but spit them out as fast as they peck at them, mixed it in with cottage cheese ( they love cottage cheese) they refused to eat the spiked cottage cheese, I gave them nothing but pellets, they refused to eat for 3 whole days and on day 3, started to eat each others feathers so, back to what they usually get..

I always wondered why pellets have to be made so huge. They're like the size of human capsule pills, which I hate swallowing whole too, and my throat is a lot bigger! So, I sympathize with the poor fluffs. Mine have crumble.

It drives DH nuts because there are two or three different names for the same protein percentage non-layer feed and it comes as pellet or crumble. He wants me to tell him to pick up 2 bags of "exactly this item" when the feed store doesn't have "exactly this item" every week -- they have "something in this category".

I don't drive so he has to handle this stuff for me since we rarely have the same day off other than Sunday when the feed store is closed.

I give my girls "salad" every evening before bed. It has scratch, meal worms, kale and a few raisins mixed in. They chase every handful thrown out to try and grab the raisins first.

In the cold weather I've been giving the girls a late snack and morning breakfast of their regular pellets soaked in warm water. They think it's gourmet!
